Why I’m Making Emergency Kits for Myself

On the main part of the website I already have a page laying out why I think you should have an emergency kit.

In this post I wanted to talk about my own personal reasons for creating emergency kits.

I like being prepared

Am I a freak when it comes to being prepared and being organised with every single thing that happens in my life. No not really.

Some parts of my life I probably need to be more organised and sort out. But that’s a story for another day and unrelated to emergency kits.

I think it can make things easier. It can also remove some frustration. Ever have something go wrong and wish you had the one thing that would make your life easier? I’ve been there. An emergency kit can help remove that frustration when something unexpected happens.

I don’t know what is going to happen in the future

Unknown when an emergency can happen so being prepared ahead of time makes sense to be

Life can be very random. You just never know what could happen next. I like being in control a little bit. There is something to be said of going with the flow. But, you also need to be realistic. Not everything is going to work out the way you think it will. So planning now and putting some stuff away in case of an emergency makes sense to me.

Help yourself before you need help

Here in New Zealand, we have ingrained into us a “she’ll be right” type of attitude. Basically no matter what happens things will work out and everything will be fine. In reality this sometimes doesn’t happen.

When a large scale emergency happens people assume that someone will come to help them.

I think fundamentally, yes that will happen here where I live. When it will happen and just how much assistance there will be is unknown.

After every large scale event there are always stories of people doing things rough. Just because the earthquake, cyclone or flooding is over and not being shown in the news, it doesn’t mean it is over. The aftermath can stretch on for months or years.

Being able to help yourself get through the initial part of such an event is such a good place to be in. Well I think it is. It’s something that I want to make sure I am ready for. I also want to make sure my immediate family are sorted in the event of an emergency as well.

Am I there right now? No, not at all. But I’m getting there and this website helps me keep on track, share what I am doing and hopefully get other people to think about their situation and help themselves now.

I like the gear

I’m the type of person that researches every little product. I want to make sure I am getting a good deal and I am getting something that does what it says it does, and does what I want it to do.

Items used in camping / survival gear and emergency kits is just interesting to me.

Lots of different gear that can be used for an emergency kit

But it can be overwhelming. Especially when you have a small or non existent budget. The cost of living is high. Being able to build emergency kits could be seen as a luxury. I think you can put together some gear that is effective both in what it can do and the the cost.

I’ll be looking at different versions of things as I build my kits out and share it in future blog posts.

I’m not a fan of prebuilt kits

I know they are convenient. But the cheaper ones usually have some junk gear in them or partly junky gear. Ones with good gear cost way too much.

I’d rather build my own and pick each item. I’m hoping I don’t get caught out needing items when I don’t have them. Time will tell on that front.

I want to empower people

I’m not sure if that is the best word to use. I want people who might be thinking about an emergency kit to know that they can build their own one and an average guy like myself is trying to help them.

So that’s everything I can think of right now. Feel free to drop a comment below, or get hold of my via the contact page.
